Let's Get Rid of Excess Baggage!

Hey, Guys and Gals, doesn't everyone have some excess baggage that needs chucking? Yep, I thought so. Here's a good article on the exact same subject, get rid of excess stuff - and it's got some good information, just for you.

5 Tips for Getting Rid of Excess Stuff by Mary Brown

Don't you think that deciding to get rid of excess stuff is somewhat like making a New Year's resolution? We're all into the moment and get all emotional and shout, "This is it! I'm going to do such and such this new year!" Hooray for us!

Since most of the time these decisions don't last, let me help you with my 5 tips to get rid of excess stuff:

1. Make a quality decision. 2. Have a plan before you start. 3. Set a specific date and time. 4. Have someone help you. 5. Determine to stay clutter free.

Don't we just finally get tired of looking at the mess, throw up our hands and vow to get rid of it once and for all?

Instead of doing that, take the time to sit down and rationally and unemotionally make a quality decision to get organized and uncluttered.

Ok, now that you've made the decision, get something to write on because you're going to make a plan.

Set a specific date and time for the cleaning. If you don't do this you'll just keep putting it off like you've already done up to this point. Believe me, I know. So, mark your calendar and stick to it.

Next get the family involved. If you're single see if you can't get some friends to help. The reason for this is to keep you from saving most of what you should be clearing out.

Tell them to be "brutal" with you! You've got to get this excess stuff gone and for good. It doesn't matter what you do with it - give it away, throw it away, have a garage sale - just get rid of it!

So you've made your quality decision to get clutter free, you've set the date and time and you've got your help. Now comes the hardest part, I think, of all. You've got to be determined to not go back to being a pack rat!

While you're in your planning mode, think about how you ended up with all this excess in the first place and decide, again a quality decision, to change your habits.

So now let's recap our 5 tips:

1. Make a quality decision. 2. Have a plan before you start. 3. Set a specific date and time. 4. Have someone help you. 5. Determine to stay clutter free.

It only takes 30 days, "they" say, to make or break a habit. Therefore, if you stick with it for at least 30 days after you get rid of the excess stuff, your desire to let things pile up should be under control and you can live a more organized and clutter free life.

How To Clean Your Entire House in One Day

Ok, now that I've gotten your attention let me say that, although I don't like to, I CAN and sometimes DO clean my entire house in one day. But, I've only got a 2 bedroom condo, so how long can it take, huh?

So on that subject of cleaning and decluttering, which IS the name of this blog after all, here's a good article.

Is There a Best Way to Declutter?
By Marye Brown

Got a match? That would surely be the best way to declutter, right? Ok, ok, I know that's not what you had in mind when you decided to read this article. But that would surely get the job done would it not?

So, now that I have your attention let me say, I don't really know if there is a best way to declutter. What I do know is that you need to start small.

Yes, I understand the problem of your clutter looks insurmountable and just depresses you to think about it, but, again start small. What's that saying about "how do you eat an elephant?", and the answer is...one bite at a time.

You can also take a step back and try to look at your clutter objectively. Ask yourself, "How can I break this job up into smaller segments?" Get a pad of paper and write out your plan or diagram it. It can be anything that will get your juices flowing in the direction of getting the job done.

Please, don't think the job has got to be done all in one day. It's that clutter that's built up over the weeks and months that's not going to disappear overnight

So, to recap, look at your goal of decluttering objectively, break it down into small steps and don't expect to accomplish everything in one day. Now is this the best way to declutter? Well, your guess is as good as mine, but if you'd like the opinion of an expert then please read on.

Here's an easy to read and information packed book, Declutter Fast, by Mimi Tanner. Written by a former pack rat this book will give you the secrets to the best way to declutter. Here are some questions you'll find answers for:

Where do I start?
How long will it take?
How can I do some emergency decluttering?
Can I keep my stuff and still be less cluttered?

If you've taken the time to read this article then I'd say you definitely want to get yourself organized. Go ahead and make the decision to find a clean house declutter plan and start on the road to being organized. SO, WHAT'S IT LIKE TO BE CLUTTER FREE?

Well, not only did I NOT do anything remotely connected to clutter free or cleaning yesterday or today...well, so far today, you never know if I'll eventually get to it...I've just been sitting here messing on my computer all day. I did stop to eat, of course, duh!

So, to make myself FEEL like I might be making some sort of progress in the fight against piles of clutter and disorganization I thought I'd share another article.

Clutter Free Forever - Possible or Not Possible? by Mary Brown

Clutter free forever - possible or not possible could be the $64,000 question.

For those of you not old enough to know, there was a television show on in the late 1950's that was called The $64,000 Question.

Of course in order to win that big a prize you had to answer a question not many people would have the answer to. Get it? Is it possible to be clutter free forever doesn't have an easy answer.

Unless you've got servants or paid help you're probably not going to be able to achieve such an organized dwelling. But there are little things that you can do on a daily basis than can ease the look of disorganization.

Here are a few tips:

When you're done with an item, put it back where it belongs.

Return coats to the closet, not the nearest chair.

Throw pizza boxes, carry out containers and all junk mail in the trash right away - don't stash them on the counter in the kitchen. (Don't ask how I know that.)

If you take your shoes off when you come in the front door, take them back to the bedroom on the next trip you make in that direction. (Ditto)

If you have a 2 story house, put a decorative basket or container on the bottom step to hold items that need to go upstairs, and take them with you when you go upstairs.

Don't leave dirty dishes in the sink. The least you can do is put them into the dishwasher to appear clutter free.

Clutter Be Gone!

Don't you sometimes just wonder where it all comes from. Did someone come into my house while I was asleep and leave this mess?

I've even tried talking to it..."Clutter, be gone." Hmm, that didn't work. This may take more work than I'd like, although I'd sure like to have a clean house and a declutter plan that worked that easily, wouldn't you?

Of course if I just didn't let things pile up in the first place that would be the answer to how to be more organized, but I've been working on it trying to get a few ideas. I even wrote about it. See if this article will help you.

CLEAR YOUR CLUTTER WITH A LITTLE IMAGINATION
By Marye Brown

Wouldn't it be nice if you could just sit back, relax and clear your clutter with your imagination? Just think of a sparkling clean room and poof no more clutter or disorganized areas.

Say, wasn't that a television show back in the 60's? You know, Samantha on Bewitched just wiggled her nose and there was a clean house. Too bad that's not how it gets done.

One way to spark your imagination on how to clear your clutter from a room or even a whole house is to visit the library and get some books and magazines on organization. You don't have to follow exactly what's in the books, but they'll help you see how to use their techniques and you can then decide how to implement them in your house.

You can also visit stores that carry organizational products. Most of the time they'll have displays set up on closet organizers, kitchen cabinet organization, shelving and baskets. Just walk around and think about how you can get your clutter under control by using some of these products.

As you're going through the library books or walking around the hardware store aren't you actually using your imagination? You'll be thinking or imagining how you can put these same ideas to use in your home.

Of course, if you're already the creative type, you can just take some time and think about how you can de-clutter and/or reorganize with what you already have on hand. That would be a cost saving measure, too!

However there's no imagination needed here for this easy to read and information packed book, Declutter Fast, by Mimi Tanner. Written by a former pack rat this book will give you the secrets to the best way to clear your clutter. Here are some questions you'll find answers for:

Where do I start?
How long will it take?
How can I do some emergency decluttering?
Can I keep my stuff and still be less cluttered?
